New London newspaper launched – The Blog Paper

I am proud to have been published in the launch of a new London newspaper: The Blog Paper. 3,500 editions of the newspaper pilot were handed out last week on the streets of London and the Editors have kindly sent me a few copies to show my journalism classmates here in Brighton.

The newspaper is a weekly summary of the “best” user submitted content from the paper’s website. You submit articles on their website and readers vote for their favourites. Photos and artwork can also be submitted, and all content can be commented on. The difference to other free publications is that theblogpaper consists exclusively of user submitted content. Content is researched, written and contributed by members of the theblogpaper.co.uk. The community decides what is promoted to the publication, defining first of all what content is worth printing and second of all, what people are going to receive. It is a truly democratic newspaper.

My article in the first edition is about nudes on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth. Have a browse through below to read it – I’m on page 16.

I didn't see anyone handing that out in London....I feel left out...

  The 3,500 copies that were distributed in London would have been completely swallowed up by the huge City! I believe they are planning to do another run of the first edition, with advertising inside. They are also going to use feedback from the pilot run to make changes to the presentation.

I love it. I've just spent the whole evening reading it more or less cover to cover. I've been following the Blog Paper on Twitter for two or three months after I read a write up on what they were trying to achieve with Blog paper and how they (the founders) thought they would succeed with a free paper where others in London had failed. I wish them every success and much prefer reading it 'in print' even if it is an online version rather than ploughing through everything on the website. So? Who's going to make one of these for Manchester..........

  Great, glad to hear you like the paper - I think the understated design works well. Also, the concept behind the content really appeals to people, especially those on my Journalism course - citizen Journalism is great when you are trying to break into the industry!
  
  Where did you read the write up on The Blog Paper? I know that they have been featured on www.journalism.co.uk a few times, but I am curious to know where else they are mentioned.
  
  With enough success there may be a Manchester edition as well, fingers crossed...

    To be honest Matt I can't remember where I read it as it was a while ago now, I think probably not long after the blogpaper website launched. It was more than likely through a link on Twitter and could have been onlinejournalismblog.com, helpmeinvestigate.com (or possibly a link from something written on there), or maybe Sarah Hartley (@foodiesarah) http://sarahhartley.wordpress.com/ whose own blog carries many links every week.
    
    Netaddict by name Netaddict by nature, I get through so much stuff and so many websites in a week it often just becomes a blur.

Its a great concept and your piece is really well written. I agree with netaddict, I want one for Manchester!!

I will read the rest of the paper tonight after all my work is done. In the meantime I have a friend who blogs and actually got to go on the plinth if you're interested..

Glad you like my piece in the paper Cheers for the link to Dan's blog - I actually know Dan through the One & Other project (small world!), we have swapped a few messages on Twitter and Facebook, and I watched his plinth hour. I liked his idea of writing on the plinth.

    Erm I've not submitted anything - my blog is more personal and not really about anything apart from myself or my thoughts so its not really magazine material ha

This looks like an absolutely great idea. As a writer, I'm in total support of a medium that gets good quality stuff out there. Congrats Matt, do they take on opinion/comment based articles?
